Basically we're just a furniture firm, but a furniture one through and through. There is not much more to us other than furniture. Our grandfather, Jim, dealt in second-hand and antique furniture in Derry and Belfast in the 50's and 60's. His eldest son, Brian, interested, after his philosophy degree studies at UCD in the ideas of William Morris, although bereft of capital, by means of trading in large volumes of solid and well made government surplus furniture from England, managed to acquire the former Stella Cinema in Mount Merrion. Many people in Dublin today tell us that they really appreciated that this very affordable kind of furniture was made available to them at an impecunious outset stage of their careers. Gradually, from a green field start, Brian, initially through restoration work, managed to build up the relevant trades in his home town of Buncrana. Eventually he was able to supply his Mount Merrion outlet with restored antiques and bespoke tables, upholstery, etc.
Unfortunately it takes more than lofty ideals to survive the roller coaster ride of the modern Ireland. The original business, despite opening other branches and even for a 12 month opening one in Connecticut, after 38 years, went into liquidation at the end of 2011. Now Brian's son Christopher has re-germinated the seed of the old tradition, this time by means of the Internet. The website provides a very economic means of retailing, against the background of the acquired knowledge and goodwill of the family name. In addition he has marshalled the tradesmen trained by his father to be able to offer once more the full bespoke service. (The skills of his civil engineering degree come in useful). In addition the experience of the liquidation has taught him that small is indeed beautiful. He can offer both his web products, as well as the restoration and bespoke services considerably more cheaply than before. From his Buncrana base he delivers throughout Ireland.
